A police officer has died of a heart attack after attempting to quell a riot which broke out around an hour before the Europa League clash between Athletic Club Bilbao and Spartak Moscow on Thursday night.
There had been tension surrounding the match at San Mames stadium with a group of hundreds Russian supporters believed to have travelled to the game without tickets and started thrown glasses and flares in a scuffle between Spartak and Athletic supporters. According to Diario AS claiming that hat the police officer suffered the heart attack during an altercation.
A spokesperson for the Basque government’s security office said: “In principle, it appears the death may not be related to any impact, but we will have to await the forensic report.”
It has already been confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held across all Spanish matches at the weekend.
He was one of five people taken to hospital, with four people reported to have been arrested so far.Athletic Bilbao had won the opening leg 3-1 in Moscow, with Russian side claiming the spoils 2-1 in the return.
