Flexibility and freedom
Entrepreneurs know the true meaning of work hard, play hard. While the self-employed lifestyle can mean lots of late nights, mountains of emails and poring over bank statements, it also means opportunities to get work done on your own time. Being self-employed means you don’t have to ask anyone but yourself for the permission to travel or take a weekend off. 72% of small business owners take at least two weeks of vacation per year, and 27% take at least four. That’s a pretty awesome benefit to balance out all the blood, sweat and tears put into your dream. The benefit of building a business is that you are in charge of deciding when you want to work. Instead of the monotonous 9-5 set-up, you’re able to have more independence and freedom. It’s not that you are doing less work, but rather that you’re able to choose when you want to work in order to accommodate other activities in your life.
You’re the boss
You have a large degree of agency and control in what’s happening when you’re starting your own company. You get to build a team, decide where the company is going, and call the shots.
You get to see your work change lives
Part of what an entrepreneur does is solve problems. They make something more efficient, provide a better service or build a new product that helps people in their everyday lives. Whatever it is that entrepreneurs are trying to sell, it’s meant to change and improve lives (and turn a profit).
You become a business leader
Being able to see how your business has contributed to the local economy and provided jobs is incredibly rewarding.
Your role as a business leader in your community is important and respectable.
You create your future
We live in a world of uncertainty. As an entrepreneur, you have a vision that is embedded in your head. Regardless of what happens, you will forever see yourself making that dream happen.
Entrepreneurship is all about embarking on a journey fueled by gut instinct. If you trust that what you see inside your head is feasible then you should do everything within your power to make it a reality. “The best way to predict the future is to create it. Entrepreneurs know that they hold the power to make their dreams come true all on their own. While other people are sitting in their cubicles fantasizing about it, you’re actually out there in the real world doing it – and it just feels good to get things done yourself. They say that hard work is its own reward, and nobody knows that better than an entrepreneur.
It Is the Best way to create wealth
It is obvious that the surest way to build huge fortunes is through entrepreneurship. Apart from corrupt politicians and inheritance, starting a business or investing in one, is the way to great fortunes. Even in Nigeria, genuine billionaires and multi-Millionaires make their wealth from business, well known examples include Aliko Dangote, Folorunsho Alakija, Tony Elumelu, Mike Adenuga, Abdulsamad Rabiu etc. Most people will argue that these billionaires have opportunities, but if they never ventured into business in the first place, they will never have met such opportunities. Being your own boss is the best way to position yourself to take advantage of any opportunity.
You do what you love
This may very well be the first and most important reason. There is absolutely no point in living your life without passion. There needs to be something that gets you out of bed in the morning. Most of the people you probably know work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and chances are they look up at the clock on the wall at least twice every hour. Why? Simple: they don’t love what they do (at least not entirely). If your heart is not fully committed to your employment then you’re wasting your time and time, as we all know, is money. A great deal of your day is invested in work. You might as well enjoy it. “If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” –Confucius
